The Development History of Self-adhesive Labels

Apr 13, 2026 Leave a message

Self-adhesive materials were first used in the United States in the 1930s, invented by R. Stanton A. Lee, and gradually evolved into an independent printing field. In 1964, a chemist at 3M Company formulated an adhesive with high viscosity but slow curing.

In 1973, a 3M development team applied this adhesive to the back of trademarks, creating the world's first label paper, and the role of self-adhesive labels began to be recognized. China began to introduce self-adhesive label printing technology in the late 1970s, initially focusing on the low-to-mid-end market, and later gradually occupying the mid-to-high-end packaging market.
